One of the PCA ministers in our Presbytery alerted me to this.
Apparently there is quite a discussion going on among younger PCA ministers ( which I am one of, but had no idea) about the future of the PCA.
Sounds good, but apparently it has sparked some debate. That debate has reached the 21st century and can be found here.
I am still trying to get my head around this, but I thought I would pass it along. Tim Keller, Ligon Duncan, Mark Driscoll, Phil Ryken are all weighing in on this discussion.

An interesting Article in the Telegraph
A church member pointed me in the direction of this article.
A study done by a professor from Cambridge in London set out to do a personality map of the U.S. It sounds like any interesting study. New Hampshire ranks 50th in the U.S. when it comes to be an extrovert.
This explains a lot from my perspective. I guess the silent New Englander seems to have some validity.

Young Scots embracing Christianity, what a surpise!
Read this article today, and I could not help but smirk a bit.
Presbyterianism has its roots in Scotland, and so when I hear about the church in Scotland I naturally am interested.
Secular Europe seems like to me as an impenetrable fortress. It has evolved to a more secular view of the world. Christianity has nothing to offer, and is seen by some as a lame duck.
And yet I have seen over and over again, that out of that kind of environment, people begin to rethink whether secular though has all the answers. Is it possible that there is a God? Apparently, more and more young people in Scotland are saying yes.
This is why I have hope in a place like New England, that has followed the trends of Europe. God's Spirit is always at work in our world.

Our last visit with the Book of Psalms this year. Psalm 41
Psa. 41:1 How blessed is he who considers the helpless;
The LORD will deliver him in a day of trouble.
Psa. 41:2 The LORD will protect him and keep him alive,
And he shall be called blessed upon the earth;
And do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.
Psa. 41:3 The LORD will sustain him upon his sickbed;
In his illness, You restore him to health.
Psa. 41:4 As for me, I said, “O LORD, be gracious to me;
Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”
Psa. 41:5 My enemies speak evil against me,
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
Psa. 41:6 And when he comes to see me, he speaks falsehood;
His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he tells it.
Psa. 41:7 All who hate me whisper together against me;

Day Trip to Boston
We spent Labor Day 2008 in Boston. And it was a beautiful day. It began on Spectacle Island hiking to the top of the highest point and see a 360 view of Boston Harbor. Very nice.
After taking the ferry back to Boston, we decided to walk around Faneuil Hall & the North End. Highlights include:
* Eating at Quincy Market
* Eating Cannolis in the North End
* Walking the Freedom Trail
* Getting a Tour of the Old North Church
* Spending time together as a family

While the wicked are in my presence.”

And my sorrow grew worse.

And what is the extent of my days;

Women in the Church
Just got this email yesterday and am still reading the articles, but I thought it was important enough to pass along quickly.
I was frustrated we did not get anywhere at General Assembly about women in the church, but I think that has changed. Read along...

In June the PCA’s General Assembly rejected Overture Nine—to form a study committee investigating the issue of women deacons.
In his defense of this decision, Fred Greco, chairman of the Overtures Committee, urged more discussion at the local level. “There are,” Greco said, “venues for this discussion to take place in a less confrontational way.”
These discussions are underway—formally and informally—calmly and not so calmly. To encourage unity and civility, we’ve published two articles on the subject in the most recent issue of byFaith. They come from two of our most highly respected pastors, Ligon Duncan and Tim Keller. Both men know and love God’s Word. Both have unwavering allegiance to its authority. And, though they differ, each one respects the other.
As you approach these articles, we want you to be aware of these points of agreement:
* Both writers are firmly complementarian.
* They agree that no credible, biblical case can been made for the ordination of women to the teaching and ruling office in the church.
* They affirm that our polity and practice is to be informed by, and corrected by, Scripture alone.
* They urge us to engage the question with full respect for our fellow churchmen who hold different views.
* They urge us to focus on Scripture rather than to respond—either by reaction or adaptation—to the culture.
* And both agree, “The real question we ought to be asking is not should we have ordained female deacons or deaconesses but rather, what kind of deaconess, or female diaconal assistant, does the New Testament authorize?”
In publishing these articles, we hope to promote the peace and purity of the PCA.

A church member had been regularly encouraging me to join facebook, and being a sluggard, I never got a around to it. I had a myspace account, which I have not frequented for some time. I thought, what is the point of facebook? Another networking website I won't use.

Psalm 23 Again
I had a feeling this was going to happen.......
Even though Psalm 23 is only 6 verses, it is 6 verses that have been studied and meditated on for centuries. For that reason, there is a lot of work on Psalm 23 and numerous insights that are very interesting.
Take for example the reference to a table being prepared in verse 5. Before I studied the passage, I am thinking a standard table that you eat at. But in actuality, it is referring to something else, and it is related to sheep. ( big surprise).
So this past Sunday I was unable to finish the sermon and will finish Psalm 23 this coming Lord's Day.
Oh well, it will happen from time to time, but for some one who plans out sermons it kinda messes up my schedule, which is a little annoying. But if I am looking for someone to blame, the finger points back at me.

Our Guide through Psalm 23
When you come to a passage in scripture that is well known, like Psalm 23, it is sometimes a challenge to preach a sermon.
I think there are a number of reasons why that is so. I think the leading reason for me is feeling a bit intimidated that the passage is so meaningful to so many people that I want to make sure I do it justice.
Somewhere along my Christian Journey I heard a sermon on Psalm 23 that used Philip Keller's book, A Shepherd's look at Psalm 23 and was really impressed. Written in 1997, it is a classic and a must read if you want to truly appreciate Psalm 23.
Philip Keller will be a our guide this Sunday as we look at Psalm 23, I think it is going to be a very different sermon, and a very inspirational one. Come and join us this Sunday.

Monsoon Season in New England
This July, it rained 18 days out of 31.

A Reason to watch Larry King Live
I am not sure I have ever watched one of his shows, but I have a reason to do so now.
Steve Curtis Chapman, one of my favorite musical artists is a guest on the Larry King Show this coming Thursday Night.
If you remember, they went through a terrible tragedy in May with the lost of their 5 year old daughter. She was killed when their teenage son ran over her in their driveway.
I thought I would share this as it is one of the first times Steven Curtis Chapman has shared since that tragedy.

Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning.
Psa. 22:2 O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but I have no rest.

O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.

They trusted and You delivered them.

In You they trusted and were not disappointed.

Sermon Text: Psalm 19
Psa. 19:1 The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Psa. 19:2 Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
Psa. 19:3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.

Attention turns to China, but not good news for everyone
I am not sure how bias this article is or not, but it was disturbing to read.
I lived in China and saw persecution first hand, I know this can be very real for many Christians. I am glad the Olympic Games are coming to Beijing, I think it is a good thing. At the same time, it can also bring a lot of pressure, and particularly on the church.
Remember to pray, pray for the church in China, particularly in and around Beijing.

Fun @ Fenway
There are many historical sites in New England, Bunker Hill, Concord, Boston Harbor, etc..... And on top of that, there are just simply famous places..... Cape Cod Area, Arcadia National Park, Mt. Washington, Lake Champlain, etc.....Well one place that fits in both categories is Fenway Park in Boston. And the Wakefields had a chance to visit this famous ballmark.
My alma mater, Grove City College, organized a tour of Fenway. We had a nice time seeing all the behind the scenes places you normally do not get to go. On a day like today ( hot, hot hot), the Press Box was probably one of our favorites.
Anyhow, we had a nice time, and we were glad we went. Now all we need to do is get to a game!

NECEP Interns next 2 weeks
I am getting a break from preaching for the next 2 weeks, and the help comes from the New England Center for Expository Preaching.
Two separate men will be preaching the last 2 Sundays in July on the Book of Psalms which we are faithfully studying this summer.
I appreciate the opportunity to work on Fall Planning and sermon prep for the fall, which I most desperately need to do.
If your curious, sermons often have a lot of prep outside of the immediate prep for a Biblical text that a congregation is studying on a given Sunday. I like to plan a year out the Biblical book we will be looking at, and also read and listen to sermons related to the text.
All of this takes time, and I am grateful to have these men preaching so I can work ahead towards the fall.

Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!

Because of Your adversaries,
To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.

The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;

And the son of man that You care for him?

What New Hampshire is known for in Religious Circles
Last year some of our elders from our Presbytery travelled to Uganda to teach at a seminary. All of them were from New Hampshire.
At first, they were not welcomed and it was unclear why. After reassuring the Uganda Christians of these elders' credentials, being biblical and conservative everything seemed fine. They had a great time
The problem was with where they were from, New Hampshire. New Hampshire in the mind of many in the church is now associated with one man, Gene Robinson.
You might have heard about him being heckled in England this past weekend, it seems not everyone in the Anglican church is still not settled on what to do next.
But in the eyes of the universal church, particularly those who are traditional, New Hampshire has a negative connotation. Next time I travel abroad, I might not want to mention I am a minister from New Hampshire.

For to You I pray.

The Glitch & God's Providence
I mentioned in the previous post there was a problem on the trip.After 1300 miles on bumpy roads ( particularly I-84 & I-87) I was driving up our street thrilled that nothing major had gone wrong on the trip.
On our previous trip, we blew a tire on the Mass Turnpike. But on this occasion, we seemed to be prepared. That was until I started backing up the trailer into the driveway.
A simple maneuver, done dozens of times. Except in this case, I heard a large bang. I got out to find the right tires nearly touching. Shocked, yet tired, I just simply unhooked the trailer and figured I would tackle this problem the next day.
The problem is a broke weld, which is not suppose to happen. It could have been quite dangerous for us if it happened while going 65 mph. A number of friends and neighbors were astonished it happened while it was being slowly backed into the driveway.
Can we say, God's Providence? I am inclined to think so.

Travel Notes
Yes, the Wakefields were traveling again, this time to Slippery Rock, PA, my old stomping grounds.It was a nice trip, we got to see lots of family, enjoy a week of rest and relaxing with the grandparents. The kids love going out to PA and were depressed as we made the long trip home to Nashua, NH.
The highlight for the kids was going to Idlewild Park, a family friendly amusement park near Ligonier, PA. The Wild Mouse was their favorite ride.
It was a good trip, enjoyed getting away. There was one glitch on the trip, but I will blog about that in the next post.

Thanks to Memorial Presbyterian from TN
This week we had some assistance in bringing the gospel to Nashua. Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton, TN youth ministry team, Ignitus, came with 18 able bodies to run VBS, a Soccer Clinic and assist local mercy ministries. They have been a blessing to the church and to Nashua and I am thankful for their ministry in Nashua.
Saturday they head home to TN so I wanted to let folks know of their ministry and support. Thanks for all of your efforts to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to New England!

Travels have a way of causing blogs to suffer
Some of you know this, but it has been a busy time for the Wakefield family. Allison spent some time working in Boston, our oldest has been in CT for 2 weeks and I made a trip to the great state of Texas for General Assembly for the PCA.So in the midst of all the traveling, the blog has suffered, and I apologize. I will try and improve things over the course of the next week or so. If you look at the picture of Dallas on the left, I stated at the hotel to the left of the ball of light. Pretty nice place for GA, next year it will be in Orlando, FL which is a nice place to visit.

In my original schedule I thought about skipping this one because I only had a few Sundays to work with in the summer. But that would have been a big mistake. Psalm 2 is a critical psalm for us to understand.

And the rulers take counsel together
Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,

Decedents from the Desert Fathers in 21st Egypt
If you know anything about early church history, you know that there is a group known as the Desert Fathers. Mostly men, who retreated to the wilderness and desert to escape from this world and live a mostly ascetic existence.
Anyhow, they are an interesting bunch, and fascinating to read their testimonies.
I came across this article talking about a Monastery in Egypt that claims that their existence comes from these Desert Fathers. Fascinating, and I must say I would be interested to visit some day if I could.

Tony Blair, Yale University & Faith
I had heard about this for sometime, but was reminded of it this morning in a recent interview by the former Prime Minister, Tony Blair about his Faith Foundation.
Tony Blair made an interesting statement in his interview, globalization is forcing everyone to live closer together. And that means that the various faiths that make up our world are also having more interaction than ever before. I think there is some truth to this, and although I may not agree with some of the premises behind Blair's foundation I think he is right about the role of globalization and world religions.
If I was just a bit closer, I would be interested in taking his class at Yale this fall on Faith & Globalization. I think it would be very interesting.

SNL: Church, H.S., Prayer & the Bible
In being a leader, it is important that people have a strong spiritual foundation. In the DVD Series, Christianity Explored, they make the point that these 4 elements, the Church, the role of the Holy Spirit, Prayer and the Bible are extremely important for the Christian.

I have been a fan of Steven Curtis Chapman for years, since the 1990s. I first heard the news about his daughter's death in the morning news. Here is an article in the Sydney Herald. Very sad. Be praying for this family. They attend Christ Community in Nashville. A PCA Church.

Sermon: Defining Presbyterian ( Part 1)
As far as I can tell, there is only one church member that actually grew up Presbyterian. Everyone else has a background as varied as you can imagine. In that sense, it makes CPC a special place, which I am grateful for as a minister.
At the same time, it makes it confusing to some because we are Christ PRESBYTERIAN church. What does that mean? What is a Presbyterian?
So when we have a holiday Sunday like Memorial Day weekend I like to take the opportunity to do something a bit different. So this Lord's Day we will be looking at the beginnings of the Presbyterian Church. And our focus will be primarily on the life and ministry of Jean Calvin.
My hope is that this message will bring in to sharper focus the early convictions of the founders of the Presbyterian Church. We hope you will join us!

Willow Creek is going deeper
Read this article at Christianity Today. Willow Creek Community Church is where the term "Seeker Sensitive" originated from, and has also been criticized for what some would say a watered down gospel.
It seems that they are making a shift towards teaching more Bible and Theology. Wow, what a concept! This Sunday we will be studying the OT book Nahum in Worship and the Westminster Confession in Sunday School. I guess we are ahead of the curve!
I am glad to see they are making an attempt to go deeper. I hope it does make a difference and creates more mature disciples of Christ.

SNL Topic: Leadership Competancy
Last Sunday we wrapped up the Intro to Leadership and how to Choose a Leader, and finished with Calling. It was interesting and there was good discussion.
This coming Sunday Night we look at Leadership Competence. How well are people suited to be a leader already? What are important qualities? What will give them a firm foundation to be a leader?

SNL Topic: Leadership => Choosing & Qualities
Last Sunday Night Live ( SNL) we began our first 10 week course on Leadership.
Over the next year, we will have 5 of these 10 week courses. All focused on developing and preparing to ordain elders and deacons for ministry at CPC. We had a good start last Sunday, and we meet again at the church office at 6:30 pm this coming Sunday.
The topic, to finish the lecture and seminar on Leadership Qualities and how to choose a Leader. The folks last week found it interesting, come check it out!

Which was situated by the waters of the Nile,
With water surrounding her,
Whose rampart was the sea,
Whose wall consisted of the sea?
Nah. 3:9 Ethiopia was her might,
And Egypt too, without limits.
Put and Lubim were among her helpers.

John 15:1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
John 15:2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.

John 15:4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.

Dear Disillusioned Generation @ CT
Found this read interesting, and I wanted to pass it on.
D.A. Carson touched on this at the Mission's Conference, and I know I have heard Piper say something similar. The current younger generations are so "me focused" that it is difficult for them to understand the need to do missions, or simply worship God.
Certainly the church needs to be relevant, but Sunday Morning is not for me primarily, it is first and foremost for the Worship of God.

2008 Mission's Conference
The Northern New England Presbytery is hosting it's second Mission's Conference this Friday and Saturday. 2 years ago, it was in Portland, ME and Dr. Richard Pratt was the guest speaker. It was a great and very encouraging time to think about the call to missions.
This year, it is going to be held right up the road in Manchester, NH. Manchester Christian Church is letting us use it's facilities, and for directions, click here.
The Conference starts with dinner on Friday at 6:00 pm, and will conclude at 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Yep, it is a big week here in NNE. And I will say more about that in other blogs, but for now I just want to mention that church will be a little different this coming Lord's Day.This Sunday, April 20 we will NOT be meeting in our usual location in Nashua, but will be having a joint service with First Baptist in Manchester and Church of the Redeemer (PCA) in Manchester. Red Sox & Yankees...the rivalry continues!
One of the joys of living in New England is a membership in Red Sox Nation. This past weekend the Yanks visited the Sox for a quick series, the Red Sox came out on top.But the real story catching every one's attention in this part of the nation is what happened at the New Yankee Stadium.

Last of the Snow
Snow has indeed become a 4 letter word in this part of the country. Most everyone I talk to is so wanting Spring to happen. For the last couple of weeks, we have been seeing melting everywhere. And I had decided that when the last of the snow was about to disappear from our home, I would blog it. April 9, 2008 looks like it is that day.
Pictured is the last bit of snow in the backyard. Kinda ugly, not as inviting as when it first fell in December. When the kids came hope, they kicked it, and that indicates that they like most everyone is excited about Spring. Can't wait to see the leaves return and warmer days. Goodbye Winter, it has been a very long and busy season!

This Sunday: Historical Sermon
I have heard of other churches doing this from time to time and I thought we would try it out as a church.
As many of you know, I like Church History, particularly the history surrounding New England. I have gotten to know George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards in new ways since living in Nashua.
Anyhow, we are going to read a sermon from George Whitefield entitled: "The Almost Christian" based on Acts 26 and the conversation Paul had with King Agrippa.
We will read the sermon in its entirety on Sunday as it was delivered for the first time in 1738, some 270 years ago in England. It was one of Whitefield's most well known sermons and is in my opinion, a very applicable one. If your interested, come and visit us this Sunday, and let us know what you think of our historical sermon .

Sermon Text: Acts 26:19-29
Acts 26:19 "So, King Agrippa, I did not prove disobedient to the heavenly vision,
Acts 26:20 but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.
Acts 26:21 "For this reason some Jews seized me in the temple and tried to put me to death.
Acts 26:22 "So, having obtained help from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, stating nothing but what the Prophets and Moses said was going to take place;
Acts 26:23 that the Christ was to suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead He would be the first to proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles."
Acts 26:24 While Paul was saying this in his defense, Festus *said in a loud voice, "Paul, you are out of your mind! Your great learning is driving you mad."

JI Packer and the Anglican Church
I saw this over the weekend, but decided to post it after the holiday.
I am fairly aware of this whole situation, it is fairly simple. The Bishop wants to control the churches in his charge and St. Johns in Vancouver is not cooperating. So the Bishop needs to strip the church of its ministers, including JI Packer.
It is an awful situation, and I have very little nice to say about the Bishop. All I can say, is that he is on the losing end. Click here to read the full article.
We need to be praying for our brothers and sisters in this situation. It is not an easy time to be a minister in the Anglican Church who embraces the gospel.

NT Sermon Text: Romans 10:5-15
Rom. 10:5 For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness.
Rom. 10:6 But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down),
Rom. 10:7 or ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”
Rom. 10:8 But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
Rom. 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
Rom. 10:10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Rom. 10:11 For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.”

Spring Forward Saturday!
In the Fall, ministers are not worried, it just means you might have more people at Sunday School than normal. Which is not a problem.
But Springtime is a Minister's worse Nightmare. Folks coming after the sermon and after the Worship Service. It happens every year.
So folks, remember, Spring Forward, turn those clocks ahead one hour tomorrow. And get a good night sleep!

A Sunny Spring Day in New Hampshire
I was waiting for the kids after school and enjoying a break from the relentless snow. I saw a student walking home in shorts. Finally, a Sunny Spring Day in NH.
We have had one of the wildest winters in a long time in NH. The highest snowfall in New Hampshire in recent History, 4th on the list of all time most snow in one season. And we still have a good chance of more snow before the season ends.
Every week, every few days it seems like we are digging out. But today was a break.
50s, Sunny, snow melting everywhere. It was great.

"The Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (FSPC) and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) are looking for a hymn and a sermon for the festivities marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformer John Calvin."

Man the fortress, watch the road;
Strengthen your back, summon all your strength.
Nah. 2:2 For the LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob
Like the splendor of Israel,
Even though devastators have devastated them
And destroyed their vine branches.
Nah. 2:3 The shields of his mighty men are colored red,
The warriors are dressed in scarlet,
The chariots are enveloped in flashing steel
When he is prepared to march,
And the cypress spears are brandished.
Nah. 2:4 The chariots race madly in the streets,
They rush wildly in the squares,
Their appearance is like torches,
They dash to and fro like lightning flashes.
Nah. 2:5 He remembers his nobles;
They stumble in their march,
They hurry to her wall,
And the mantelet is set up.

And the palace is dissolved.

Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life
There was a recent survey done by the Pew Forum that was very comprehensive and interesting to read. After interviewing 35,000 folks and going through large amounts of data, they have developed a picture of the religious landscape of America in 2008.

Fun on the Weekends
So some of you know that Drew got me interested in NASCAR last year and now both Drew & I look forward to the weekends and watching our favorite drivers.
Mine is Ryan Newman #12, and he just won the Daytona 500 for the 1st time last week. Drew is a Dale Jr. fan, and if you have no idea who he is, then you are really clueless about NASCAR. Dale Jr. is the most popular driver on the track.
Anyhow, thought I would share one of the ways we relax on the weekend!

I like statistics.......cold hard facts that tell us how things really look.

No real surprises, except for who is growing the fastest, the Mormon Church and the Jehovah Witnesses. The big mainline churches continue to drop in membership very quickly.
